Everyone who's watched the Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld has wanted an infamous bowl of that crab bisque or mulligatawny or jambalayaaaaa (cue Newman running down the street clutching his paper bag). Imagine our surprise when we discovered RaviSoups, a family-run restaurant with three locations around Toronto started by Ravi Kanagarajah. His soups, or what he calls 'hot tubs for your soul', have given him the much friendlier moniker of Soup King.
The ordering procedure isn't as strict as the Soup Nazi's ("you hold out your money, speak your soup in a loud, clear voice, step to the left and receive"), and thank god for that because despite having a menu featuring only ten items, it's impossible to choose with each soup sounding better than the last.
Soups and wraps range from $7.99 to $8.99, but the soup and wrap combo is a no-brainer at $10.99. We order the Corn Chowder (full size at $8.99) with the Grilled Flank Steak wrap (full size special at $10.99), and the Curried Apricot and Red Lentil soup (full size at $7.99) with the Curried Lamb wrap (full size at $8.99).
The Adelaide location's rustic atmosphere matches the rustic vibe of their soups. Squeezing past the cashier and kitchen, you're met with a giant reclaimed wooden table where your meal is brought to you on a lazy susan.
Curried Apricot and Red Lentil Soup and Curried Lamb Wrap (soup and wrap combo for $10.99)
The Curried Apricot and Red Lentil soup is flavoured with cilantro and lime creme fraiche and has the strongest Indian influence out of everything we ordered. It's subtly spiced, making it balanced and flavourful. The Curried Lamb wrap is made with Ravi's signature roasted yams and baby spinach (which serve a triple purpose of soaking up excess sauce, keeping the wrap together, and being delicious), caramelized onions, tomato chutney, and chipotle mayo. Strangely enough, the lamb tasted more like chicken but whatever it was, it was still a pretty solid wrap.
Corn Chowder and Grilled Flank Steak wrap (soup and wrap combo for $10.99)
The Corn Chowder is made with blue crab and thai basil, topped with shallots and crisp corn and is one of the best soups we've ever tasted. In Jerry's wise words, "you can't eat this soup standing up, your knees buckle". There's no way the Soup Nazi could have made anything this good--smooth, creamy, and thick – this soup is the Rolls Royce of soups. The Grilled Flank Steak is also delicious – made with roasted yams and baby spinach (obviously), caramelized onions, mushrooms, and creamy brie.
If the Soup Nazi's soups are on par with Ravi's, we can understand why one might chose soup over a woman. (It was a bisque.)
