Despite being a very hyped restaurant, Momofuku Noodle Bar is a nice change from the bustling action of the Financial District. They're not only world renowned for their food, but also their long lines so when we were seated right away it was very surprising. Filled with lots of artwork, large open windows, and minimal wooden tables, the noodle bar created a really nice atmosphere to get away for a meal.
One of the first things you notice about Momofuku is how many different types of people it attracts, from the bankers on their 10 minute power lunches to the casual diners. Even the waiters differed--one was dressed in all black while ours donned a baseball cap, Blue Jays jersey, and khaki shorts.
We ordered their Kimchi ($7), Roasted Rice Cakes ($11), and the oh-so-popular Momofuku Ramen ($15). Our food arrived quickly enough, starting with the Kimchi--a true jack of all trades. Not only did it look amazing (it came in a jar and who doesn't love food in jars? We even got to keep it when we asked to pack up the left overs!), it was perfectly seasoned and delicious to boot. The Roasted Rice Cakes arrived steaming hot, flavoured with red chilli, onion, and sesame, but quickly cooled down, making them tough to chew. Lastly, the pièce de résistance--the Momofuku Ramen contained tender pork belly and shoulder, fish cake, and egg, suspended in a broth that was just a little too salty for our liking.
Unfortunately, this is where the service faltered a little since after they gave us the cheque they seemed to forget us. However, for what we paid, Momofuku remained a damn good experience. One day when we're made out of money, we'll try Daishō and Shōtō.
